Hygiene Corner: February Is Heart Health and Gum Disease Awareness Month

Written By Scott Dentistry on February 8, 2017

Can your mouth tell if you're at risk for heart disease?  It just may!  Researchers have found that people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to have heart diease.  The risk could be even greater for those with high cholesterol.  This reality hits close to home in that more than 85 million Americans have some form of cardiovascular disease and more than 200 million American adults have some form of periodontal disease.

The link is bacteria...

  • Bacteria from the mouth enter the bloodstream through the gums
  • Oral bacteria stick to fatty plaques in the bloodstream, directly contributing to blockages
  • Oral bacteria trigger an inflammatory response, causing the blood vessels to swell, reducing the blood flow and increasing the risk of clots

When you visit Michelle or myself for your professional hygiene visit, we review your medical history and do a complete periodontal assessment.  You know the drill....taking all those numbers around your teeth!  We are assessing your periodontal health.

When your periodontal health is better, it can make your heart health better.  At Scott Dentistry, we care about YOU not just your teeth.
